Kurt Schwitters Prize 2019 of the Sparkassenstiftung of Lower Saxony

In the exhibition of the Kurt Schwitters Prize winner Mika Rottenberg (*1976 in Buenos Aires, lives and works in New York) her latest film "Spaghetti Blockchain" has its European premiere. In this work, co-produced by the Sprengel Museum Hannover and the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, Rottenberg combines landscape images, sounds and physical processes in a colourful suggestive sequence. Matter is cut up, melted and kept in motion in the most diverse facets, colours and states. In jumps between macro- and microcosm the physical world is examined: Images of Siberian plateaus with traditional singers in traditional costumes, of the world's most powerful particle accelerator near Geneva and of a potato field in Maine are mixed in a kaleidoscopic drum and fed into a cosmos of images that is as bizarre as it is entertaining. Their artistic approach, described by Rottenberg herself as "Social Surrealism", creates fantastic allegories that touch global connections from their absurd and yet real sides.
