LIZ COHEN biographybookspress
Liz Cohen plays all the roles, from avant-garde mechanic, photography director, bikini model, contemporary artist, body builder, to ethnologist. With her present project, BODYWORK (the transformation of a Trabant — a very popular automobile among the ex GDR— into an El Camino low rider, a part of US automotive mythology), Liz Cohen explores questions relative to the construction of communities from multiple points of view— social and cultural divisions, the representation of women in the entertainment industries, as well as intimate workplace relationships... Also, by the singular position she occupies, at once placing herself as the object of desire and as the project’s initiator, Liz Cohen provides herself with the possibility of exploring her own fantasies, as well as those of the viewer. Liz Cohen was born in 1973 in Phoenix, Arizona. Recipient of a 2005 Creative Capital Foundation Project Grant (New York), she has recently exhibited at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale, Arizona, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), with Jan Åman at Färgfabriken (Stockholm). and has participated in numerous exhibitions, notably in the United States.
